Your Lips, Simplified
With so many formulations and styles, lip color can be intimidating. But today, we are simplifying things for you by sharing a few must-know lip hacks to get the perfect pout.
Stick to a Lip Care Routine
The path to healthy lips begins with lip care. Before you put on any lip color, you need to start with clean, hydrated, and exfoliated lips. We recently broke down the ultimate lip care routine in our blog, so we recommend checking that out here!
Some Key Notes to Remember:
- If your lips are clean, hydrated, and looking good, you don’t need to worry about exfoliating.
- If your lips are looking dry or if they are peeling, you’ll want to make sure to exfoliate and moisturize ahead of time.
- Having dry lips will cause any lip color you add to accentuate the dried-out appearance.
Having an established lip care routine that is part of your daily skincare regimen will help your lips look and feel their best right now and long term. Hydrated lips feel great and help prevent premature aging due to dryness. And in the short term, any lip color you put on is going to look smooth and buttery if you’re well-moisturized.
The internet is full of makeup hacks, but it’s not always easy to tell the good ones from the bad ones. Here are a couple you’ll want to know.
It’s not what it sounds like. Getting dry lips occasionally is inevitable, even if you have an amazing lip care routine (as you should). When that happens, we recommend trying this little life hack called “slugging.” We know it sounds gross, but trust us, it’s easy, mess-free (and requires no slugs).
Popularized by K-Beauty and TikTok, the term slugging refers to a particular moisturization method. It can be used on the face or the lips (or your hands and feet, honestly). In the case of your lips, you use your regular lip balm or lip moisturizer and then an occlusive product like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) over the top to lock in the moisture.
Occlusive substances are designed to form a barrier on the skin’s surface that blocks moisture loss. So, when you put on a lip balm underneath an occlusive (like Vaseline), you effectively lock in the moisturizing effects of the lip product for a longer period.
We recommend trying this at night, so you can get the benefits of this locked-in moisture for 6-8 hours while sleeping. Then, in the morning, you’ll wake up with fresh, hydrated lips!
Just remember to apply the Vaseline over the top of a lip product. Without the lip product, the Vaseline will just sit on top of your lips and won’t provide additional moisture.
2. Dealing with Matte Lips
Matte lipsticks have become increasingly popular over the past few years. It’s easy to see why, since they give any look an easy, chic upgrade.
Unfortunately, due to its formulation, many matte lip colors dry out the skin, leaving it drier after wear. As a general rule, most makeup artists recommend not wearing matte lip products every day so that you can give your lips a break from the drying effect. Instead, maybe try swapping out your matte lip color with a hydrating lip plumper or a tinted lip balm.
Your Go-To Lip Tips
Need some extra tips to keep your lips looking fab? We’ve got you covered.
Whether it’s from licking your lips, not drinking enough water, or not wearing chapstick, during the day, your lips are going to dry out and need additional moisture. And since your lips cannot naturally hydrate themselves (learn the truth about that here), it’s important to always carry a lip product with you. But what do you do when you are wearing lipstick or lip gloss? How do you keep your lips moisturized without smearing your lip color?
Before applying lip color, put on a lip balm to add hydration to your lips. You’ll want to add your chapstick/moisturizer early enough that your lips have time to absorb most of the lip balm before adding color.
After your lips are colored, you’ll want to make sure your lips remain moist. One of your best options is to use a lip product that rehydrates the lips with sodium hyaluronate or hyaluronic acid. (Psst! Our Plumping Lip Jelly does exactly that!)
2. Prime Your Lips
You have primers for your eyes and face - why not add a primer for your lips, too? Lip primers moisturize and smooth the lips while helping lip color stay put all day. It’s great to use with lipstick, lip liner, lip gloss, lip plumper, or lip stain.
3. Use Lip Liner
In case you were skeptical, let us tell you - lip liner is your friend. We know lip liner can seem old-fashioned, but trust us when we say it is a game-changer for anyone who often wears lipstick or lip plumper. So, what makes lip liner a power player?
- Helps prevent lip color from running
- Allows you to be precise for fuller-looking lips
- Gives your lip color a more defined, smudge-free look
- Can be used alone for a sleek, matte look
- Pairs perfectly with a lip plumper
4. Use Concealer
Another great way to keep your lips looking fresh and smudge-free all day is to add a subtle outline of concealer around your lips. Concealer gives an invisible barrier that your lip color won’t cross through. Using concealer around your pout is ideal for those super-defined lip looks.
5. Add a Lip Plumper
Although there are plenty of lip hacks online about ways to make your lips look bigger at home, we’re a fan of the most straightforward life hack - using a lip plumper. Simply swipe it on, and wait a few minutes for your lips to look more full.
Currently, Babe Lash has three shades of lip plumper, Sheer Mauve, Red Glass, and Clear - but that doesn’t mean you are only limited to having your lips one of those colors! The Plumping Lip Jelly is layerable, meaning you can wear your favorite shade of lipstick or lip liner underneath the clear lip plumper to create your favorite lip color and add a bit of fullness to your lips!
